Ethiopia awaits 41 train engines from China

The Ethiopian government has placed a procurement order for 41 light train engines, the country’s foreign ministry said Thursday.Ambassador Dina Mufti, told reporters that the government had signed an agreement with Chinese train manufacturer, CNR Corporation Limited, to supply the engines.

The engines will be installed on the trains that will ply the Addis Ababa railway which is under construction.

Mufti who did not provide the cost of the engines, however said that they would be designed in accordance with the Ethiopian environment, and will run at a maximum speed of about 70 km per hour.

The first batch of the engines will be delivered by the end of 2014 when the Addis Ababa railway services would be launched.
