IGAD member states have appointed Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin of Ethiopia and General Lazarus Sumbeiywo of Kenya as special envoys for the troubled South Sudan.
The two are expected to spearhead mediations and broker peace between President Salva Kiir and his sacked Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.
This comes just a day after Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn held three way talks in Juba with President Salva Kiir and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Member states have further directed that urgent measures be undertaken including the creation of a conducive environment for all stakeholders to participate in face to face talks by 31st December 2013.
The IGAD heads of state in an extra ordinary session held at State House Nairobi on Friday condemned the ongoing bloodbath in South Sudan and stated that they will not accept any violent overthrow of a democratically elected government.
IGAD has therefore called on all humanitarian actors to act quickly and provide all necessary assistance to all civilians and urged the government of South Sudan and all armed groups to open humanitarian corridors and ensure protection of civilians.
