Runners from Ethiopia took the top slots in the 39th St. Patrick’s Road Race Saturday, with a new course record set by the top female finisher.
Askale Merachi, 27, was the first woman to cross the finish line, running the 10-kilometer course in 33:14.
Mengistu Nebsi, 35, the first male finisher and the top finisher overall, completed the race in 29:42.
Race Director Brian Donoghue said earlier this week that he expected the women’s record of 33:17 — set by Leslie Lehane in 1991 — to be broken at this year’s race.
As of Tuesday there were 6,000 runners and 350 walkers registered. Donoghue said he expected the final tally to surpass last year’s record of 6,000 finishers.
