NORTH COLUMBUS (James Jackson) — A family mourns the loss of a 19 year-old Ethiopian immigrant shot and killed outside of a hotel. At this hour, Columbus police are still trying to figure out why he was shot.
Investigators say Dinkistra Mengistu was shot in the upper body, after a party at the Sheraton hotel, on Hutchinson Avenue, in North Columbus, early Sunday morning. ABC 6/FOX 28 talked to family members, as they make funeral arrangements.
His sister, Feven Mengistu, broke down in tears as our cameras were rolling. She tells us he graduated from Westerville South High School in 2012 and attended Columbus State studying business. “He had a bright future. Bright future. He was my youngest and I always used to tell him, ‘you know what? Just study hard and you can help with the family,” Mengistu said. But, the teen’s future was cut short.
Investigators say the shooter and Mengistu were in separate cars when the shots were fired at the car Mengistu was in. Feven didn’t want to talk about the incident, but she did say her brother, who she affectionately calls “Dink,” was a social guy. “He was the beloved one from all his friends. They always come to the house and pick him up. Without Dink it was just boring for them,” Mengistu said.
His family, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ethiopia, keeps him in their prayers and his older sister searches for strength. “Losing my only brother. I don’t know how I’m going to live after this.” Court records show Mengistu has been charged with several crimes including OVI and Drug Abuse.
Police have not arrested anyone in the case.
